East African Community (EAC)

In force

In brief

No customs duties between the members, and a common tariff on goods from elsewhere. Also opens trade in services (transport, logistics, distribution).

What it changes

  • Customs union

no duties between the members on the goods covered, and a common external tariff on goods from elsewhere.

  • Services agreement

opens trade in services between the members (transport, logistics, distribution…), not only goods.

How to benefit

  1. 1Check that the product "originates" in the exporting country under the agreement's rules of origin (plain resale from a third country does not count).
  2. 2Ask the supplier for the proof of origin the agreement requires (certificate or origin declaration) with the invoice.
  3. 3Present it to customs on arrival: your freight forwarder confirms the preferential rate for the product's HS code.
